GOLD BABY!!

Hey!

So I finally did it! A first place finish in a race! Well, in my age category anyway. Good enough!

After work on Friday we headed to the Hat for the Medicine Hat College Rattler Run on Saturday morning. After doing this race last year severely hung over (thanks Dave by the way) I learned a few lessons to help this year. Number one, no beer. Number two, go to bed before 4 am. Number three, don't use running with your little cousin as an excuse to run slow.

The race went horrible. It was probably the worst I have ever felt in a run in my entire life. I had cramps from the first 200m in, I had labored breathing and didn't feel like I could take a deep breath, and my legs felt like lead. I did everything so I wouldn't feel like this. I might as well of had beer the night before!

Yeah, I felt like crap the whole 5km. I walked for about 30 seconds on the way up the hill, and struggled to keep my legs going. When I finished the race I had to sit down and felt like puking and dying for about 15 minutes before I started to feel better. Weird.

Anyway, Leslie finished and I told her about my run and said that I hope I don't win a medal because I didn't feel like I ran a good race. I walked in a 5km run, I should not win, right? Wrong. We went inside just in time for the presentations and my age category. My official time was 21 m and 59 seconds and they announced third place at around 24 minutes and Leslie just bursts out laughing and says 'you are going to win'! Sure enough, I did.

Here are the numbers:

Time: 21 minutes 59 seconds (personal best)
Age Group: 1 out of ? (they don't post this?)
Males: 9 of 117
Overall: 16 of 347

I'll take it. Next goal though, sub 20 minutes! When? Hopefully, this year!

Sunday was an interesting day. I would like to call this 'Reverse Tri Day'. The morning started with another race here in Calgary, the Police Run. I decided to do this one too, but use it as a recovery run and enjoy running with a lot of people from the gym. The race went pretty good. They changed the course this year and it seemed like the llloooonnnnngggggeeesssssttttt out and back ever. Downhill first half, uphill second. It sucked. I was hoping to try and place in between 24 to 25 minutes for an easier tempo jog and I did pretty well as I was about 23 minutes 50 seconds. I felt pretty crappy again though, I don't know. Everyone from the gym did great too. Allan and Marc finished their first races ever, Sharlene was close to a PB on a tough run, Peggy finished strong from just getting back from holidays, and Shauna and Monique had more fun than anyone I think. I love group runs, so much excitement!

When we got home I crashed on the couch and Leslie was in the bed with Rexy for about 4 hours. All of us were OUT! When we got up Leslie and I jumped on the bikes and watched The Rock for over an hour. It was an easy spin to try and loosen up the legs a bit and so we wouldn't nap all night.

After a quick bite to eat it was off to the pool to meet Greg for a swim before he heads back out of town. We did a nice long warm up, some drills, then the main set was 3 x 500m with a 60 sec rest. Not too bad. The only problem was that the pool was freezing cold! I think I used more energy shivering than swimming. We did get a good 20 minutes in the hot tub after though!

Now I'm dead. Pooped. Everything hurts. Calves, quads, hamstrings, shoulders, back, triceps, abs, feet. You name it. Tomorrow I am going to relax. Maybe a easy bike ride to get some time under my belt, but that's about it!

Til' then....
