Hey!
We just got home from Lethbridge, it's 2 am. A pretty well done day, I should say!
We got to Lethbridge at about 4pm. We ended up taking Rexy since Nathan (my brother) and Tara (his girlfriend) had some urgent matters come up that they had to take care of. We picked up our race packages and headed out to Stirling (about 30 minutes South of Lethbridge) to meet our friends for a nice big supper and to see their new house. We ended up eating late and just sneaking out to make it to the race on time. Oops, almost late, not good!
The race went well. There were some problems though. The first one is that there were 1400 people racing in the 6km event. Fine and dandy. The problem is that every single slow or young person decided to line up right at the start. I was up there too and I nearly got DESTROYED by grandmas' running like gazelles. Once we got going things were tight. Too tight that I couldn't see what was in front of me and was jumping around to pass people. All of a sudden a giant sign pops up right in front of me at the last second. It was in the middle of the road and I think it was for traffic control but I didn't have a chance to read it as I SLAMMED right into it. It caught the corner of my leg, flipped me around and I fell on my back and rolled about 3 times over. I managed to get up and keep going but my leg was numb like somebody just gave me a huge charlie horse. Not cool. What the &$%# was there a sign doing in the middle of the course with 1400 people running at full speed down the coulee? I was a little angry to say the least. Thank you to the two people who did slow down to ask if I was ok, whoever you may be!
The rest of the race went well. Once I got to the bottom, people were already walking. The pathway narrowed and the walkers took over. It was like reverse bowling, try to get around the pins without knocking them over. I don't have a problem with walkers, but stay on the side and don't bunch up to chit chat on a tiny path in the dark!!! I might have cursed a few times. Sorry.
I passed probably a hundred people (not lying) and started up the hill. For some reason, it didn't feel as bad as I remember. All I said was 'you screwed up last year by letting yourself walk, don't do it again'. Before I knew it I was up and a short jog to the finish.
The numbers:
Total time: 28 minutes 57 seconds
Placing Age Group: 9 out of 45
Placing Gender: 64 out of 570
Placing Overall: 70 out of 1645
So, goals reached?
Goal #1: Win Medal. Nope. The last medal was awarded to 27 min 10 seconds. I missed it by 1 minute 47 seconds. If this was last year, I would have finished 3rd.
Goal #2: Under 31:25. YES! I was 2 minutes 28 seconds faster than last year, which is a big improvement for a 6km race. I didn't walk up the hill at all and I made it under my goal of 29 minutes.
Goal # 3: Get prizes. YES! I ended up coming home with an Asics back pack, an Asics hat, and a Runners Soul hat! None of which I stole from a kid, only an adult with slow reflexes. I almost had a gel too, but it bounced out of my hand!
The big achievements were also tackled by two others. Leslie set a new personal best in the 10km run with a 52:?? and Peggy my client also finished with a personal best for the 6km run. She finished 27 of 80 in her age category! Great work gals!!
When said and done. A good day. No medal, but hey, there is always next year!
My battle wounds from the fall.
Grizz

Hey Chad - Congratulations on your awesome result! Taking over 2 mins off a 6km run is amazing! What the heck was a sign doing in the middle of the race course? That is dangerous!
Hey thats great! 2 out of 3 is a really good success! The best part is you didnt have to roll any kidies to make it happen! If it wasnt for that sign you would have got all 3!
