No Greg, I haven't signed up yet!

Hey!

So now that I can officially swim the Ironman distance of 3.8 km non-stop, I am starting to get a lot heat from a few people (GREG! LESLIE! DARRYL!) about signing up for the Calgary 70.3 Ironman in August. Greg keeps checking this every day to see if I have posted about signing up yet. No Greg, not yet!

So why not you ask. Hhhhmmm. I don't really know. First of all, it costs $250 to register. That is a hitch for my truck, or a bike rack, or Rexy's spay bill in a month or so. That seems like a lot of money to do cardio for 6 hours straight. Secondly, even though I can swim, why would I want to? Ghost lake is apparently freezing cold. I hate early mornings as it is, let alone jumping in a freezing cold lake at 7 am???? Thirdly, I don't think that I can commit to the training for it. The best way to hurt yourself is to do something like this without being properly prepared. I know that I can swim for 2km, and bike for 90km and run for 21 km but I don't know how I would do all three of them without having some structure in the months leading up to it. I'm sure I'll continue swimming in the summer, biking with Leslie on weekends and running a couple times during the week (especially since I am going to do the marathon in September), but I am not entirely convinced that this is the way to approach a 6 hour race?

So needless to say, I haven't signed up. Will I? I'm sure I'll probably cave into it sometime. If not this one, there are others as well. I hear Sylvan Lake Half Iron is going to be kind of exciting this year!

What else is going on? Things at work have kind of being stressful as of late. There has been a lot of stuff weighing on my mind so that is keeping me tired, not to mention it's pretty busy still too. I still managed to get some squatting done on Monday, 225 lbs for 5 working sets of 5 reps. Pretty comfortable too. I again tried to limit the rest and keep things going a little more up tempo. Monday night I swam with everyone, since we missed it on Sunday night. I had a pretty crappy swim. I just felt dead and everything was sore and cramping (maybe from squatting???). Probably, hey? I copped out early and went and sat in the hot tub to at least enjoy my time there so I would be ready for the next swim.

That next swim was tonight. I felt great. I set a new personal best in golf again, 78 total. I think it was 31 strokes and 47 seconds for the 50 m swim. Greg said he could only get a 77 tonight so I'm sure coming along (on a good day anyway). I had to make a little run for the men's room after the warm ups so I ended up staying in the pool late after everyone was finished to make sure I finished everything as well. We did 10 lengths of 100m with a 25-30 second rest in between, then 2 sets of 5, 50 m lengths with a 10-15 second rest in between. Not so bad to be honest. I kind of expected it to be harder. Greg watched me for a length or two and said that I look great and my technique is really good. It was nice to hear, after the long, tiring day I had! Thanks Greg!

I plan on getting in some bench and deadlifts tomorrow night after work. I haven't got my weekly tan in yet either so I'll hopefully squeeze that in after as well.

This weekend we are headed up to Edmonton to visit Leslie's family. If I don't update before then, happy Family Day everyone!
